Lisa Smart is forced to sit down by the Deputy Speaker for daring to mention Proportional Representation when debating a bill called the "Representation of the People Bill" . Burnham's new government needs to allow this debate to happen. #fixpolitics #fairvotes #andyburnham #ukpolitics
Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform (LDER)
@libdems4er.bsky.social
Campaigning to fix UK politics through fair votes. An affiliated organisation of the Liberal Democrats - the party leading the fight for PR for decades, but now with 72 MPs! We also work proactively cross-party & with like-minded others to deliver change.
An amendment on a National Commission for Electoral Reform was ruled out of scope for the Representation of the People Bill yesterday. That's why we teamed up with @makevotesmatter.bsky.social and @unlockdemocracy.bsky.social to take THIRTY alarm clocks to Westminster. It's about time it woke up.
Lisa Smart MP - Lib Dem Cabinet Office Spokesperson & Fair Votes APPG Vice chair asks the new Minister for our Democracy if she will "crack on" and fix politics so we can fix the country. Well said! #fairvotes #ukpolitics #fixpolitics
We will not let Andy Burnham off the hook. Ed Davey pushed him on his support for fair votes again this week - and in the response he said "This Parliament must be a circuit breaker" It can ONLY be a circuit breaker if he uses THIS Parliament to do the work. We need fair votes now
“Too much time is spent bickering about party colours and not working together” People do not believe politicians work together in the interests of the country and 79% of respondents "definitely" think more cooperation would help. See the full results of the survey: www.lder.org/fix-politics...
“I do vote but always wonder why I bothered.” This is just one quote from our survey but there are many like it. 95% of respondents agreed that the % of seats should match the votes - we need to make votes matter. See the full results of the survey: www.lder.org/fix-politics...
It's great to hear that Burnham is still committed to a fair voting system. But words are no longer enough. Now he's got the power to deliver the change he's long advocated for. So what is he waiting for? Our message to the PM is simple: the time for PR is now. ⏰
Today is the third reading of the Representation of the People Bill. The biggest amendment to the bill - signed by over 170 MPs from across the House - calls for a National Commission on Electoral Reform. Our voting system needs an urgent review. We hope the government listens.
You can’t fix our country until you fix our broken politics. It was brilliant to meet some democracy campaigners today!
I've written to the Prime Minister ahead of his first statement later today, with a clear message: Our politics is broken and we can’t fix our country until we fix our politics.
Today MPs debated the Representation of the People Bill. Together with friends at @compassoffice.bsky.social and @unlockdemocracy.bsky.social, we brought 34 alarm clocks to Westminster to send them a loud message: it's time to wake up! ⏰ Our democracy is in crisis. We need fair votes now.
“I'm sick of voting against things rather than for things." A very common sentiment in our survey results - and one shared by voters from all parties. 96% agreed they should not have to vote tactically. See the full results of the survey: www.lder.org/fix-politics...
“A fairer voting system will force ALL MPs to care about ALL voters, not just the swing votes” We have had thousands of responses and 94% of them agree that our politics fails to represent everyone - and that's a problem. See the full results of the survey: www.lder.org/fix-politics...
Great to meet with party leader Ed Davey MP, Cabinet Office Spokesperson Lisa Smart MP, and President of LDER Olly Glover MP at Parliament today as we launch our survey results. People really do not believe politics is working. See the full results of our survey here: www.lder.org/fix-politics...
“The churn in leaders does not inspire confidence in any long term issues being sufficiently addressed.” This is just one responses among thousands we received - 90% of respondents did not have confidence in our politics. See the full results of the survey: www.lder.org/fix-politics...
"Our current system is not fit for purpose" “Binary, adversarial politics is worse than useless.” Our survey received responses from all over the UK, all age groups and all political parties. 92% agreed: politics is not working See the full results of the survey: www.lder.org/fix-politics...
"It's a complete mess." This is just one of thousands of responses we received from all corners of the UK, all age groups and all political parties - responses which delivered a rating of 2 stars out of 5 for our political system See all the survey results here: www.lder.org/fix-politics...
Politics needs more collaboration. In a multui-party world, collaboration is the only way we will be able to make progress - and as it stands, our voting system only encourages division. We think it's time to change. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
With so many under-represented, is our system really democratic? We don't have to agree with the politics of other parties to know this is unfair. When the public speaks, we must listen - and right now, our system isn't doing that. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
We need fair votes before the next election In 2024, Labour won 411 seats with 34%. As the landscape continues to change, next results could be even more disproportionate. Democracy must reflect our views - not distort our votes. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
Democracies need compromise, not total control. The single-party echo chambers of FPTP hurt our politics. When decisions fail to take into account the views of the public and aren't scrutinised by the opposition, it's a sign for change. What do you think? digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
FPTP forces people to choose candidates out of fear for the alternative. There must be a better way. When we vote for people and policies we truly believe in, we build a better politics - but that requires changing the system. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
Our voting system is not fit for modern politics. We need a fair electoral system that represents the broad spectrum of beliefs in British politics, not one which tries to entrench the long-gone two-party system. Do you agree? Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
The electoral system is broken at all levels When parties win huge majorities on a fraction of the vote, all voters lose. Councils benefit from a variety of voices where scrutiny is strong and decision-making is truly representative Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
We believe that all voting should be positive: for candidates we want, not simply the 'next best option'. Under a fair voting system voters will no longer have to compromise on their beliefs for the sake of tactics. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
When 34% of the vote leads to a 63% majority, it is no longer a political question - it is about fairness. A broken system makes for a broken government - one that makes decisions that do not represent the public. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
Who doesn't want fair votes?! Calls for change are coming from all over, not just the Lib Dems. With Andy Burnham now PM, even Labour (who won a huge majority thanks to FPTP) finally seem ready to cancel our outdated system Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
What would happen if we held an election using the various forms of PR? These colourful maps show the variety of Britain's beliefs, which are largely underrepresented in Parliament. We think it's time this changes. www.theguardian.com/politics/ng-...

Great article from Roz Savage MP: the critical things Burnham needs to do to fix our country. Top of the list: distribute power & wealth As we have been saying: fixing our politics is not a silver bullet - but its a necessary first step to fixing everything else www.libdemvoice.org/if-andy-burn...
If Andy Burnham isn’t the Messiah… Good
“He’s not the Messiah,” a voice from the Conservative benches heckled during Andy Burnham’s swearing-in. Quite right. Britain doesn’t need another political saviour. We’ve spent far too long…

When politics lacks collaboration and accountability, everyone loses. At a local and national level, it is clear that good policies are only ever born from good politics - if we want change, we have to change the system. Tell us what you think: digitallibdems.typeform.com/fix-politics
