Was thrilled to find so many freshwater sponges during a practice dive in the St. Lawrence River, including some growing on unionid mussels! #freshwatersponges

Freshwater sponges are ancient colonial invertebrates found in virtually any lake or river. The photo below shows Eunapius fragilis. Water enters through tiny pores (ostia), passes through chambers lined with collared cells that filter particles from it, and then exits through large pores (oscula).
