Doing a course on Food Writing for the next couple of months (for pending @antipasto-ayce.bsky.social reasons that I sincerely hope pan out 🤞), and anyway I'm just gonna post my homework assignments in this thread for fun. Hw for Week 1 was to write a short memoir about food.

I’d gone to Seattle for the first time, alone and relieved and tired. I wanted to explore, and this place had always felt familiar to me, even sight unseen. I should have realized it would be easy find comfort here. The city bustled with variety and possibility but without the anxiety and austerity I always felt in New York. Nearby, the mountains bloomed with verdure that had the same calming effect I knew from life on Long Island but with an added vertical dimension that comforted and challenged me all at once. And the sky overhead was clear despite any cliches about rain.

I cared more about being here than eating. Meals out weren’t in my modest budget (the same budget that had me staying four-to-a-room at local higher-end hostel). I kept granola bars in my bag so I wouldn’t have to worry about figuring out where to eat or what I could afford or which places would be able to accommodate my particular combination of lifelong vegetarianism and early-onset Crohn’s. I wasn’t disappointed, I’d come here to just be here, not to eat. Not really.

But even I could end up too famished for granola after walking for eight hours one day all over the city in the summer heat. I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep without a real meal. I also knew I didn’t have the mental energy to sort out getting one for myself.

Thankfully hostels are wonderfully adept at providing options for food.

That night the hostel was hosting a group socializing dinner at a local Indian restaurant, only $5 per person. Inexpensive, vegetarian, and featuring cuisine often gentle enough to leave my stomach in peace. I’d have to mingle, but I could manage for the sake of a good meal.

I did more than manage, and I’m glad. As we sat at long tables with our trays full of warm naan and crispy samosa and tangy chana masala (a new favorite way to eat chickpeas), I got to hear some of the stories of my fellow travelers. Some were older, some younger, some had been to Seattle multiple times, and others were new like me. They were all at different stages of understanding themselves as people, which helped me feel a little less lost in my own delayed journey of growing up.

Later, as we returned to the hostel, I felt full of gratitude in many ways for both my trip and our meal. And I hoped I could have another dinner like this one if and when Seattle welcomed me back someday.
