Earthion is a recent Genesis shmup from Ancient that is pretty great. If you're willing to emulate, Gun-Nac (NES) and Eliminate Down (Gen) are great. Gleylancer is pretty fab, too. Raiden is a classic. You can also get the Ray series in the Ray'z Arcade Chronology, and they're excellent.
