Kind words for my new book from author/writer David Owen. "Steadily worsening conflicts over access to fresh water increasingly shape the world. No one has studied this subject more thoughtfully than Peter Gleick. This is an urgently important book." Pre-order here! thenewpress.org/books/when-t...
The US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit has ruled there is no constitutional right to clean #water. The UN has declared a human right to water, but that has no sway here. If there's no "constitutional" right, federal & state laws must provide that protection. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

To generalize it, AI is being used to spin the existing economy faster. The existing economy has some mis-design baked in; going faster accelerates its negative consequences further beyond the resiliency of ecosystems. This outcome is not an inevitable, but it is the one currently being chosen.

Purdue Researchers Use 3D Printing to Make Open-Source Alternative to Costly Groundwater Sensors
A plume of contamination spreads underground. A building's foundation weakens. A wetland mysteriously loses water. All three scenarios need the same technology: sensors that track how groundwater flow...

A major problem with the AI data center build out is that its resource use is not even necessary for its own stated purposes. theaifootprint.com
When everything runs faster, you tend to use more energy, which means waste accumulates faster and resources are gone sooner.
All creatures of this planet are in for a very hard time. We will have to fight hard for them, and for ourselves, as the machine world continues gaining strength. We will have to make sacrifices, and keep up with a vision.
We are entering an age of ubiquitous robotics, and we must prepare to study these machines in the way we have studied ecosystems - because their presence will impact every corner of the globe. If we take this seriously, we may yet find a way to a sustainable world.
You might not be following this because it's not about cities per say, but the administration just repealed the 2001 roadless rule in National Forests. They want to open up for more logging and more building which messes with everyone's drinking water. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/18/c...
Trump Administration Moves to Allow Logging in Pristine National Forests
The move to repeal the ‘roadless rule’ would pave the way for road construction and logging in nearly 45 million acres of untouched back country.

A Common Operating Picture (COP) is a single, continuously updated, and shared display of relevant operational information that provides a unified view of an incident or mission for all involved stakeholders. When industry builds out, these interfaces need to be supported rather than suppressed.
An important take away from Codeberg's blog: AI automated code generation spins CI/CD pipelines more heavily, regardless of code correctness, acceptability, or quality. This itself consumes precious resources pointlessly. blog.codeberg.org/protecting-o....

First visualization of underground water flow direction vector using our open source sensor!
This is an interesting one: low water season in an intermittent stream shows the past history of fire, with current new growth of riparian vegetation but the complete loss of the shrubs. Interaction of fire and water shapes the ecosystem and the landscape.
Water is cool. We value it, not just as a quantity, but because of what it means.
We need to build a technology that fights for the environment and the people. We need a new grid.
The watershed is the fundamental unit of terrestrial landscape on the planet’s surface. When we seek to use these landscapes, we alter or sustain their rivers and streams. In all activities, every moment of our day to day lives, we are either degrading or restoring rivers.
Housing for single tier version, 3d printed. Only does 2 dimensional groundwater flow monitoring, but lower cost & open source build complexity.
Working through different 3d printed designs for sensor mounts inside our groundwater flow probe. Minimize affect on flow while maintaining solid placement.
Which do we need more: neuromorphic computing circuits or healthy, sustainable landscapes? Which do you think we should invest our time and energy and resource in creating?
