it’s about nuclear annihilation, but reading There Will Come Soft Rains today you can’t help but think that this is the inevitable destination the tech bros are dreaming of: a fully automated earth with no living creatures left to complain or make it messy

In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunny side up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two cool glasses of milk. "Today is August 4, 2026," said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling, "in the city of Allendale, California." It repeated the date three times for memory's sake. "Today is Mr. Featherstone's birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita's marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills." Somewhere in the walls, relays clicked, memory tapes glided under electric eyes. Eight-one, tick-tock, eight-one o'clock, off to school, off to work, run, run, eight-one! But no doors slammed, no carpets took the soft tread of rubber heels. It was raining outside. The weather box on the front door sang quietly: "Rain, rain, go away; umbrellas, raincoats for today. .." And the rain tapped on the empty house, echoing.

spent the morning deep cleaning in the doctors office and apothecary. look how satisfying, the way these glass eyes shined right up made me very happy before after

8 glass eyes in a box with dividers so they have individual compartments. they're dusty and dull the same eyes, plus more after cleaning, they're shiny and bright and the color of the irises comes through so much better now

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Discourse around this movie has been pretty uniformly terrible but We Are the Sea People is actually a very important message for a nation that has taken its unprecedented wealth and power and used it to turn the world into a nightmare of corruption and violence that will ultimately consume even it.
