It’s been ten years since our friend, Jo Cox was murdered by a far right extremist. Jo was a champion of community, tolerance and mutual respect. The values she believed in continue to inspire me, and people across the country to seek unity over division and peace over hatred.

This morning, the Leeds Sikh Community held a vigil for Henry Nowak in Chapel Allerton. I was touched by the warmth and kindness of all those who attended to pay their respects to Henry following his murder. Henry will be remembered and we must redouble our efforts to end knife violence.

Henry Nowak's murder was an unforgivable tragedy. Vickrum Digwa lied to the Police and it's right that he has been sentenced to life imprisonment for this evil crime.

Today, on Yom HaShoah, we commemorate the six million Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust. I’m thinking of the Leeds Jewish Community and members of my own family who suffered so much during this vile period in history. We must confront antisemitism in all its forms.

Today we lost a wonderful person, a woman who fought for social justice all her life, a mother who was bringing up four lovely children, a daughter who made her parents proud. I have always been grateful to call Mahalia France-Mir my friend.
