Unfinished Vow: We do not possess bodhicitta. Rather, bodhicitta gradually possesses us, gathering our lives into a widening field of relationship until our thoughts, words, and actions accord naturally with the life of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas.
Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra: “The mind that sees impermanence is called the mind of awakening.
Bodhicitta, as Dōgen understands it, is not an emotional intensity burning itself out but a disciplined way of inhabiting relationship, continually renewed because it arises from the realization that there has never been a separate self struggling alone against an impossible world.
Impermanence is not the enemy of love. It is what gives love its urgency and its depth.
Unfinished Vow: Bodhicitta is known less by the words we speak than by the lives we make possible.
