Earlier in the summer I presented a figure showing how a comparable weather event to the summer of 1976 would be experienced in a warmer current climate. It would be 3-4°C hotter, with London hitting 38°C. Yesterday, that is exactly what happened.
Temperatures have now provisionally exceeded 37°C 🌡️ Before 2026, the UK had recorded 37°C or higher on only six occasions. This year alone, we've already reached that mark three times.
July 2026 was an exceptional month for the UK's climate statistics, with records challenged or broken for rainfall, temperature and sunshine. Read more in our press release ⤵️ www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/new...

Today has been the hottest day in May on record with Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 34.8°C - exceeding the previous highest May temperature in the UK by a full 2 degrees Celsius🌡️ This heat would be exceptional in the UK even in mid summer, let alone in May📈
Temperatures at Teddington Bushy Park have hit 32.8°C, provisionally equalling the all-time May record🌡️ Temperatures will continue to rise through the afternoon, we'll be giving updates here ☀️
Today will be the hottest day in May in the UK in our temperature records, with highs of 35 degrees Celsius expected📈 The current May record is 32.8 °C. Records are usually only broken by tenths of a degree - making this heatwave unprecedented for the time of year 🌡️

January was a busy month for the weather with a big storm, lots of sunshine, and some heavy snow. Busy for the weather ... but quiet at the allotment. But that means there's more time to introduce Jean - the cocker spaniel! www.itv.com/watch/news/a...
