In 1938, small investors, especially in France, hoarded #gold coins because gold bars were too expensive. High demand pushed coin prices above their gold value. Some state banks profited by selling coins at a premium and replacing them with cheaper gold bars.
May 1939 - more frequent references to defence spending in the Financial News newspaper. Here the growth in the importance of defence expenditure for the economy.
