As a thought experiment, it's interesting to think about what other words you might substitute for "bias" here and how calling it bias functions to frame discussions about culture, narrative, cognition.

Before diving into our critical media literacy unit, I’m providing conceptual scaffolding. IMO, Being aware of the ways our cognitive/cultural biases shape the way we see the world—& by extension the narratives we believe/tell ourselves—is vital. Concept mapping is a great tool for schema building.

Came across a fun bit of marginalia from Darwin’s personal library: In a copy of “Principles of Geology”, Lyell argues that animal varieties can change over time, but never deviate enough to form new species. “If this were true,” Darwin scrawls in the margin, “adios theory”.

I feel like there's a particular kind of challenge here. Maybe it's generational? Idk, but for me, anyway, there's a strong bias towards assuming that things like app notifications are "transparent" i.e. that what the notification tells you accurately reflects the thing it's notifying you about. 1/

This is my periodic rant that Apple Intelligence is so bad that today it got every fact wrong its AI a summary of @washingtonpost.com news alerts. It's wildly irresponsible that Apple doesn't turn off summaries for news apps until it gets a bit better at this AI thing.

That's how most of #earlymodern printed books were offered and consumed in Europe: unbound, likely not stab-stitched, usually just slightly folded. Say hello to the world of quartos and octavos, small and cheap prints, #Flugpublizistik, street literature, etc. Forget about bound books and libraries.

misinformation is a very real issue, the problem was it was folded into a power-flattering pseudo epistemology where only grimy foreigners and YouTubers were capable of doing it when some of the biggest promoters of misinformation are the NYT and Atlantic. This bred cynicism and indifference.

White Noise didn't get everything right, but it got a lot right, repeatedly, e.g.: "Only a catastrophe gets our attention. We want them, we need them, we depend on them. As long as they happen somewhere else. This is where California comes in."

As a social historian of magic I've always had a problem with the concept of the "Enlightenment". Our world today proves we are just on a continuum of disbelief & disregard for rationalism, which more or less impacts on society in general.
