There’s much to admire about Mamdani but let’s be real - the NYC budget (USD$124.7b) is bigger than the NSW budget (AUD$133.0b). The city has $$$ to throw at relatively small projects like fixing potholes & 5 grocery store pilots (USD$70m excluding waived rent & taxes) as it’s chicken feed #auspol

What Mamdani is actually doing in NYC with his five pilot city-run grocery stores
It also won’t be completely run by the public sector, it will in fact be contracted out to private operators
You wouldn’t know it from #auspol social media posts but we already have a version of “Mamdani-style” public grocery stores in Australia. It’s a Fed Govt owned entity called Outback Stores & there’s also a Low-Cost Essential Subsidy Scheme for 100 remote stores. Arguably a pretty similar model

At some point we need to conclude that the waste, fraud and poor / bad outcomes for people is a feature, not a bug of voucher-based delivery of social services. It flows directly from the mode of economic organisation of the programs in their current forms. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-10...

Australia's rising interest rates are not just down to government spending
ANALYSIS: Borrowers again 'hit over the head' to bring inflation down
Why is Australia stuck in an inflation problem that has sent interest rates to 15-year highs?

A tighter fiscal policy can be about tax as much as spending.
Western progressives can tell you about primaries for obscure municipal elections in the US but not massive social movements that democratically topple governments in the Asia-Pacific
Our everyday language and habits and ideas of what's normal incorporate all kinds of political ideas that reinforce the existing structures of domination. That's what ideology is. An important part of the work of politically-engaged intellectuals is to help us become conscious of this.
Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security. Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations. Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. —Harry Truman, 1952
