ECCO Landfill Fire Update- Sept 24 The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) continues suppression efforts at the ECCO Recycling facility landfill fire in southeast Calgary. The fire remains contained to the landfill site as crews continue working toward full extinguishment.

One of the best parts of being Mayor is recognizing Calgarians who step up. Theo is only six years old, but his quick thinking helped stop a potentially deadly fire. It was an honour for Council to recognize Theo and his proud mom and dad at City Hall. Calgary is proud of you, Theo!

UPDATE: Big progress on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main! 80% of the new steel pipe is now installed. Crews have been working since January and we remain on track to have the new feeder main in service by the end of the year.

Hundreds of Calgary runners were up bright and early Saturday for the annual Calgary Police Classic! It was great to join them. Thanks to everyone who came out to run and support the Calgary Police Youth Foundation!

Thrilled to help open the first Research Day at Kids Cancer Care! I got a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible work supporting kids through cancer, from education to staying active. Thank you to the volunteers, parents, staff and board who make it possible.

What happened to Parker Wells is heartbreaking. Our review found serious failures in how the 911 calls were handled, causing a delay of about 17 minutes. As mayor, I am deeply sorry. Disciplinary action has been taken. We are making changes, and we have to own this.

UPDATE: Thank you to Council for agreeing to hear our pro-Canada motion as urgent business, and to Councillor Yule for co-sponsoring. The motion as asks Council to affirm Calgary's place as a vital part of Alberta and Canada. Debate happens later today.

I ran for Mayor saying Calgary should lead a strong, united Canada. Now it's time to follow through. Separation threatens investment, jobs, and the confidence of newcomers who chose Calgary home. That's why I'm asking Council to stand up for Calgary's future within a strong Alberta and Canada.

This week, Council held our Indigenous Focus Meeting, 10 years after the White Goose Flying Report. We’ve made progress. But there is much more work ahead. I was gifted the Blackfoot name "Pitaasiksyinom," or "Black Eagle." I carry that name with serious gratitude and responsibility.

CPS District 8 just took nearly 2 kg of cocaine, meth, hundreds of pills, three firearms, ammunition, and more than $46k in cash off Calgary streets. This came after three months of police work sparked by two overdose death investigations. Great work by CPS.

Calgary Police have been making good progress against the extortion and shootings terrorizing members of our community. So far: 51 incidents, 19 shootings, 19 people charged with 59 offences. Thank you to CPS and everyone coming forward. We will keep pushing to hold these offenders accountable.

Thanks to your help, we saved Calgary's downtown Free Fare Zone. For now. Transit is looking for a sponsor, and I hope they find one. But keeping this service shouldn't depend on one. Sponsor or no sponsor, I'll keep fighting to make the Free Fare Zone permanent.

UPDATE: The City has been pursuing enforcement action against Ecco through the Courts for an extended period of time. Last week, the Court issued found ECCO to be in violation of its development permit on the recycling facility site because it was storing dry waste on the material recycling

Calgary firefighters remain on scene at the southeast landfill fire. The fire stayed contained overnight and crews are making progress. Heavy equipment and contractors are bringing in more dirt to help smother the fire. Thank you to our crews working around the clock.

Earlier this month, I had the honour of walking in Calgary’s Pride Parade as your Mayor. I thought about the kid I once was, who struggled to believe he had a future. I never thought it would lead here. We must keep working to make Calgary a city where everyone is safe and belongs.

Good news, Calgary! Back in August, I said outdoor water restrictions might be needed during planned work at Bearspaw next week. We now expect to get through it without restrictions. If conditions change, we'll let you know. A BIG thank-you to our City water team!

Shanah Tovah to Calgary's Jewish community. Over the years, Jewish friends and families have welcomed me to Shabbat dinners, holidays, celebrations, synagogues and around their kitchen tables. Those friendships have become an important part of my life.

I am very encouraged after meeting with PM Carney and federal Cabinet in Banff. I was there to advocate for Calgary’s priorities and our growing city. A stronger Calgary and a stronger Alberta mean a stronger Canada.

Worth reading. You do not have to agree with your government to love your country. In fact, loving Canada means demanding better when we fall short. But there is a line between criticizing a government and cheering when Canada is diminished.
