The delays in reopening our Penny Lane community centre are absolutely unacceptable.

This is a press release that I have issued in despair at the snail like pace of the Liverpool City Council Penny Lane ward councillor, Richard Kemp, has criticised the council and AMS the administrators for the former organisation which ran the community centre, and property agents acting for the administrators for delay and obfuscation in getting open the former centre reopened after more than nine months.

Central government should listen to local government and involve the expertise of the LGA and other bodies in looking at the next stages of local government reform.

Yet another government makes a mess of local government reform

In 1973 I took part in the first set of local elections which completely changed the way that local government was run. Thousands of small urban and rural district councils were abolished, and some county boroughs became cities whilst the number of counties was reduced. These reforms were indeed needed and came about because of an independent review of local government on the ways and levels in which it worked and which was independent of politicians until, quite rightly, they took the final decision on the recommendations.

As the executions of bright young people in Iran continue, we must all remember them and the sacrifice that they are making to defend a basic humanity which should be the right of every person in the world.

The executions continue in Iran

I have been on holiday for the last few days which has given me the opportunity not only to do a little sleeping drinking eating and sunning but also to catch up on what's been going on with the news outside Liverpool. Some of the news has been quite encouraging particularly that relating to Donald Trump and America's Republican Party. There seems to be little doubt now that the Democrats will do well in the midterm elections and clip the wings of Donald J Trump.

I was appalled yesterday when I heard that Keir Starmer was standing down from the House of Commons with immediate effect. His act of selfishness strikes a blow against the reputation of every person who stands for election and is successfully elected. When we seek election, we are effectively offering a contract to the people of those that we wish to serve.

The UK must stand up to the orange faced man-child as strongly as Canada

So, the latest piece of stupidity comes out of the mouth of Donald Trump. Changing the name of a lake called Ontario and which has been called that for more than 400 years to Lake America. Even if this was a lone incident, we would have to say it is inane and stupid, but of course it is not a lone incident.
