Something bugs me about Italian opinion polls. There's not enough variance: FdI has been at 27-and-a-bit in 12 of the last 13 polls. My suspicion was herding, so I went down a statistical rabbit hole, which involved inventing a new measure of herding (which may have picked up a different issue!). 🧵

Yes, AI for research is great, but the use case that gives me more satisfaction is teaching. Vibecoding figures and diagrams in Rmd/tikz is awesome. Making effective visualizations manually used to take me a lot of time.

In the 90th anniversary of the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, I recommend one of my favorite history and politics books. A masterful study on the roots of collective action and the nature of political identities

🗳️ Electoral Reform Alert 🗳️ Yesterday, the Italian Lower House approved a new electoral reform, now headed to the Senate. This would be the fifth major reform of the electoral system in Italy since 1993, and it could bring an even more radical right-wing party into the next government coalition. (1)

Absolutely. I always found the "peer review should be paid" point self-serving and a bit weird. The way I see it: regular, *deep* engagement with frontier work is a key part of our job, just like regular presentations. It's not a favor to strangers

IMHO, the problem is not that profs don't collect money every time they evaluate a piece. The problem is that for profit publishing giants collect money every time we publish a paper.

Some job market news: in Spring 2027 I will join @cunef.bsky.social as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Quantitative Methods. I am excited about joining a fantastic group of social science scholars at CUNEF and moving to Madrid, one of the capital cities of European political science.
