New paper w/ @hannohilbig.bsky.social: we examine how local exposure to the Great Recession affected politics over the long run. Counties where unemployment rose more in 2007–09 moved toward Democrats, not the populist right. The shift remained visible in 2022.

Absolutely. I always found the "peer review should be paid" point self-serving and a bit weird. The way I see it: regular, *deep* engagement with frontier work is a key part of our job, just like regular presentations. It's not a favor to strangers

My most recent pet peeve: Working papers posted behind the paywalls of "research institute WP series" should be treated as non-posted papers: not read, not cited.

Just like far-right leaders today, Hitler came to power because of the collaboration of right-wing elites, who either wanted to "fight off the left" or thought they could play the far right.
