Kudos to @derekgeographer.bsky.social for another great media contribution while the news develops in real time!
“I believe the name change, because of the way it is being carried out in such an abrupt, unilateral and vitriolic way… could likely damage the United States’s ability to negotiate, given how much the Lake America mandate is inflaming opinions and defensive posture anxieties in Canada.”
“On a deeper level, the president's abrupt and unilateral threat to rename Lake Ontario… would say something negative about how the names on our maps, landscapes and bodies of water are being reduced to pawns and weapons…”
Trump says US considering renaming Lake Ontario as Lake America
Trump's remarks come amid a deepening cross-border trade feud that has increasingly centered on Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com “When the Boy Scouts of America voted in 2017 to welcome girls into its core programs, I described Cub Scouts to my Girl Scout troop of 10 girls,” Erica Song writes. “Seven of them made the switch and have never looked back.”

What I know from six years of leading Troop 163 is that these girls invigorate scouting rather than weaken it.

Proud to publish w/ @sethographer.bsky.social. Summer camp nostalgia hides hard questions. Who got to attend? Who was excluded? What values were taught? And what vision of America did camp ask children to embrace? @geographers.bsky.social @utkgeography.bsky.social theconversation.com/summer-camps...

It matters how a president speaks. Because their words don’t just persuade — they set the boundaries of what feels possible, acceptable… even inevitable. That’s how the unthinkable starts to sound normal, according to a scholar of presidential rhetoric. theconversation.com/presidential...
Presidential words can turn the unthinkable into the thinkable − for better or for worse
For years, Donald Trump’s rhetoric has relied on insult, ridicule, threat and contempt. But the scale of violence in his words during the first week of April 2026 was new – and had a purpose.

If NBA expands to Las Vegas, what would the team be called? We have ideas
It would be a shock if a Seattle team wasn't called the SuperSonics, but it's a different story for a (potential) team in Vegas.

Kids don’t want to be teachers when they grow up anymore. “Why would I?” high schoolers ask — pointing to low pay, burnout and lack of respect. Teachers earn just 73¢ on the dollar compared to other college grads, and 1 in 8 open teaching positions remain unfilled.
I asked students whether they’d want to be teachers? They quickly responded, ‘Why would I?’
Approximately 52% of teachers in 2024 said they would not advise young adults to enter the profession.
