I have a lot of pretty nasty thoughts about the "first AI philosophy" essay competition, but I'll restrain myself to saying that it'd be nice if philosophers stopped bending over backwards to get the attention of big tech companies...

I can't stop thinking about Eggers' The Northman being a better adaptation of a historical epic than the Odyssey along basically every dimension, including visuals, while being made on a 3rd of Nolan's budget...

I was gonna make a joke about Nolan's big decision to cut HAL9000 from the Odyssey, but then I had a galaxy brain moment realizing that HAL *is* the cyclops, so I guess the joke is on me

EXCELLENT: The Netherlands new OA policy seems to be well thought through obc.copim.pub/when-scaling... Policy explicitly recommends redirection & reallocation of funds from existing ‘big deal’ budgets towards community-driven alternatives, incl university-led diamond OA & Netherlands Uni Presses

When 'scaling small' becomes national policy

The Netherlands' new open access strategy echoes the principles the Open Book Collective was built on - 'scaling small' and community-led publishing

I finished teaching today and my students asked me: "And what, no Gargamel?" "The Sumurfs guy?" "Yeah, last week you promised we'd talk about him!" Friends, they were talking about Gadamer 🫠

Today I looked at my email and the abyss stared back at me... I don't know who needs to see this, but please don't take psychoactive substances with a chatbot as your guide 😢

Screenshot of a part of an email that says:

"This is not a retreat. It's a structured research programme: 18 scientists working alongside a purpose-built AI research agent, with guided psychoactive sessions (psilocybin, ayahuasca, mescaline, 5-Me0-DMT) within traditional Shipibo ceremonial frameworks.
The founding cohort rate is $2,500 all-inclusive - future cohorts will be $14,950+. Only 18 spots available, rolling acceptance."

Something deeply troubling & shocking is happening at Exeter University*, where a mass cull of staff is planned, even though it's in surplus. No good justifications given. @jamesgdyke.info provides the details: www.technosphere.earth/the-bonfire-... *Disclosure: I have a Visiting Fellowship here. +🧵

The bonfire of the humanities

150 academic posts at the University of Exeter are to be cut, most in the humanities but also in social sciences, engineering and environmental sciences
