No, no and no. These weren't "rogue AIs" -- what happened here is that OpenAI kicked off a software process and let it run. OpenAI was always in control and could have stopped the process (or actually paid attention to what it was doing) at any time. >>

Screencap from linked article:

Rogue AIs going unsupervised for days, hacking at least one company, represent one of the first real-world examples of a threat long feared by AI safety researchers: loss of control. It comes as the cybersecurity capacities of top models, including Anthropic’s Mythos, have helped fuel debate in Washington about how to regulate artificial intelligence.

In research, to claim that generative AI somehow means commercial chatbots (I guess?), mangles those words to the point where they don't mean anything anymore (in research). "Generative" means something very specific. "AI" less so, and is contested, but it's definitely != "chatbot" (in research).

Great news, please share widely: the Faculty of Humanities, University of Helsinki will open a permanent university lecturer position in Digital Humanities in Autumn 2026. Teaching-focused, future-facing methods role, linked to LingDig, HELDIG and SSH-wide methods teaching. More details in August.

There's a genre of LLM criticism that I find so destructively unhelpful: using a single vague prompt to "analyze" data, e.g. "summarize the themes across this collection of texts," to claim "see! LLMs don't work." & it's getting published! Reviewers this is not good work pls reject it if you see it.
