![Was [Bloodborne’s] unusually piecemeal way of telling its story – accomplished not through filmic cutscenes or dialogue as in other games, but instead through short item descriptions that are not only deeply ambiguous but often contradictory – merely masking a fundamentally incoherent plot? Was its spatially disjunctive gameworld genuinely surreal or just shoddily constructed? And if the game’s notoriously challenging boss fights – on which I might spend hours, if not days, failing repeatedly – were ‘tough but fair,’ as Souls advocates often claim, then why were my enemies able to hit me through walls?
