The legendary Black Arts poet and professor Nikki Giovanni joined the ancestors —December 9, 2024. 29-years to the day from when Toni Cade Bambara joined the ancestors. Bambara included two of Giovanni’s poems “Woman Poem,” and “Nikki-Rosa,” in her groundbreaking 1970 The Black Woman, An Anthology.

I will not let this sacred day- 12/9/24 come to an end w/o acknowledging 29th anniversary of — daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, cousin, sista-friend, Black feminist author, filmmaker, cultural worker, teacher, &guiding ancestral Spirit —Toni Cade Bambara’s ascension into the ancestral realm.
