Today, Brighton & Hove Green Party has written to Katy Bourne, the Police & Crime Commissioner. We are seeking answers, accountability, and justice for the violent and extreme conduct directed at counter-protesters by police on Saturday 13th June at the Carnival Against Fascism.

Within your directly elected remit is a responsibility to hold the Police to account on behalf of the public. On Saturday 13th June, many of our members witnessed and were subjected to some of the most violent policing in our city’s recent history. Thousands of Brighton and Hove residents assembled in the city centre in a display of unity against a march called by the far-right groups ‘South East Patriots’ and ‘British Imperial League’, among others. These groups spread misinformation, conspiracy, and racial hatred particularly towards our Muslim and migrant neighbours. They encourage violence on our streets - just last week endorsing the abhorrent white supremacist riots taking place in Belfast. Organised violence, targeting people based on ethnicity and orchestrated by agitators using scapegoating and fear to divide us. We are happy to call this what it is; fascism. Racism and hatred have no place on our streets, and we are proud that our members stood shoulder to shoulder with many thousands across our community to defend our fantastic city against the normalisation of far-right thugs marching through our neighbourhoods. On this occasion, the police appeared to make every effort to facilitate the march. First down Surrey Street, then Terminus Road, then Trafalgar Street. While repeatedly trying to force a path for fascists, police officers used violent methods against the counter-protesters. Our members witnessed or were subject to the use of pepper spray and batons. Police officers were seen striking and kicking those taking a stand against the fascist protesters. Our country has a long and regrettable history of police violence.
