"“So. To be clear. You’re asking me to move in, and pretend we’re married so it scares the Kamo off?” Satoru asked the man before him.

“No. Not pretend. I ask for your hand, legitimately,” the widow corrected. “Although, if you were more comfortable with a ruse, I could accept that.” Before Satoru could think what to say, the widow bowed his head. The gems in his headpiece shimmered in the changing light. “Regardless of the legitimacy of our union, should you accept, I ask you act as the new shogun.”

The widow waited for Satoru’s eye to meet his own. Only then did he explain.

“To our public, I was a bride. My husband would rule the surrounding lands as its protector. That need not change if my husband is you. I only ask that within the grounds of the palace, you respect my rules there. Anywhere else within our boundaries, you and your clan may rule as you wish. Only the estate of the palace needs to be my domain.”

On the surface, it was a fair deal, if not better than fair. It was a good enough deal that no one would reasonably offer it if they didn’t have something to hide."
