Look out for the dramatic Black Rustic (Aporophyla nigra) on the wing from September to October 👀 The adult moths come to light and sugar but can also be seen feeding on the flowers of Ivy and even overripe Blackberries. 📷: Iain H Leach #MothsMatter #MothMonday #TeamMoth

This Silver Y turned up in my moth trap this morning but also can be seen flying during the day. A migrant moth that does breed here but its early stages cannot survive our winter. #mothsmatter
Caught an Autumnal Rustic on the Isle of Wight this week. It was showing a hint of pink on the wings. Information on the species suggests this is a feature of individuals in the south. Anyone seen this in Norfolk? #mothsmatter
This is a lovely film to share with children and grandchildren along with the follow up learning resource. 👉️ butterfly-conservation.org/discover-and...

Talking butterflies/moths is always enjoyable. Last weekend we attended 2 events the Finnbars Force Charity Day & Edingthorpe Church Harvest Day. We loved hearing the passion people have for nature. We shared our overnight catches of moths, which at Finnbar event included a Clifden Nonpareil.
Why are we featuring a picture of a banded demoiselle? This image won the NWT Photographic Competition (mobile phone section) was taken by one of our transect walkers Clifford Wicker. His image along with many others including butterflies will be on display at the Cley Visitor Centre all this month.
Ringstead Downs judging by social media posts seems to have been a butterfly hotspot this year. It was fairly quiet yesterday but I did manage to see both Small Copper & Small Heath. A Clouded Yellow seen by other walkers eluded me. #savebutterflies
Counted a least 5 Wall butterflies on the coast path between Thornham & Holme yesterday. They all looked in excellent condition contrasting with numerous very worn whites.#savebutterflies
Reports received of Swallowtail caterpillars feeding on Fennel. These are likely to be the Continental Swallowtail (gorganus), not the British one (britannicus) which is found only in the Norfolk Broads. We would be interested to hear of any sightings of the Continental form.#savebutterflies
23 moths of 12 species caught in our North Norfolk garden overnight including Black Rustic, Lunar Underwing, Small Blood-Vein and a common migrant to Norfolk Vestal. #mothsmatter
We are at a couple of events this weekend the Finnbar’s Force Family Fiesta at Applewood Hall in Banham on Saturday and at the Harvest Day Celebration All Saints Church Edingthorpe on Sunday. Please come and say hello if you are attending.
Painted Lady enjoying the last of the sun this afternoon in our North Norfolk garden. #savebutterflies
A few butterflies at Ringstead Downs, Norfolk this afternoon before the sun disappeared, Common Blue and Speckled Wood. Also saw Clouded Yellow, Red Admiral and Wall Brown. @norfolkbutterflies.bsky.social
Another successful moth trapping session at Foxley Wood this week, 193 moths from 38 species. Highlight was another Clifden Non-pareil from the same location as in August #mothsmatter
