It all happened so quickly, but… it’s officially a wrap for this year’s CLaSH Annual Meeting in Boulder, CO! 🏔️ The meeting was jam-packed with plenty of hard-hitting discussions on the multiple facets of cascading hazards.
Last but definitely not least, we would like to introduce our final two speakers at the upcoming CLaSH annual meeting! They will discuss crucial next steps in reducing hazard risks and losses in the United States.
Time is running out to join us in Boulder, CO for this year's CLaSH Annual Meeting! Late registration is still open but space is limited, so if you've been on the fence now is the time to secure your spot.
Hazard research wouldn't be possible without the tools and frameworks developed by our partnering institutions and other organizations. At our upcoming CLaSH annual meeting, we are excited to highlight two speakers discussing these advancements:
Only a few more weeks until our CLaSH Annual Meeting in Boulder, CO! Today, we’re highlighting two CLaSH principal investigators who will discuss prominent research advances in their respective fields.
Over the past week, the CLaSH rapid response team has been investigating the Nepal flooding event and compiling our researchers’ findings into an ArcGIS StoryMap. Our goal is to rapidly share relevant information, resources, and emerging scientific insights with the broader community.
In addition to talks about hazard research, we have also invited speakers to talk at the CLaSH annual meeting about the broader importance of studying hazards in the modern social landscape!
🛠️ Next - Mirna Kassem: recent PhD, current postdoc at UC Berkeley. Mirna’s research focuses on advancing the characterization, assessment, and mitigation of cascading natural hazards through data-informed computational frameworks that integrate modeling with sensing and monitoring technologies.
Today, we’re excited to highlight some early-career faces presenting their research at the CLaSH annual meeting. 🌧️ First - Ann Sinclair: PhD student, Northwestern. Ann is working with CLaSH to generate high-resolution weather simulations over Southeast Alaska during recent landsliding events.
⚙️ Also coming out of WA, we have Dr. Erkan Istanbulluoglu: Professor in the CEE Department at the University of Washington. Erkan studies the interactions among hydrologic, ecologic, and geomorphic processes in watersheds and how these interactions shape geohazards during climatic extremes.
🌊 Next CLaSH annual meeting speaker is Dr. Allison Pfeiffer: Associate Professor in the Geology Department at Western Washington University. Allison studies fluvial geomorphic processes, primarily in gravel-bedded rivers often through the lens of sediment supply and grain size.
Right in the heart of Boulder, CO will be our first CLaSH Annual Meeting on Sept 23-25! We have a diverse lineup of speakers from across all branches of hazard science listed below. The link for more details is below - hope to see you there! 📢 CLaSH Annual Meeting: sites.google.com/umich.edu/20...
Another day another debris flow fan! Today the UO gang, along with friends from UAF, explored the 19 mile debris fan in Haines, Alaska. The day included installing cameras, collecting rocks, and enjoying wild raspberries.
This week, Josh Roering’s research group touched down in Southeast Alaska! Today, the group started off their field work - including checking out new culverts, downloading seismometer data, and updating infrasound sensors. Stay tuned for more awesome science and beautiful Alaska photos!
Just over a month away until our first CLaSH Annual Meeting in Boulder on Sept 24-25! Come and learn about the latest advancements in hazard science from experts in the field. See more details about our annual meeting here: sites.google.com/umich.edu/20....
Yesterday, we headed to the field to collect some data at a burn site from the 2020 Cameron Peak fire! Made field observations, set ground control points, took drone surveys, and (of course) ate lunch in the rain for a classic field work adventure. #remotesensing #rainorshine
CLaSH is in session! Over the coming days, our field course students will learn how to use methods such as GPS/GNSS, UAS, and LiDAR to collect post-reconnaissance data in Colorado - stay tuned for updates, we're off to the field tomorrow! #hazardscience #insidetheclashroom
Slots are filling fast for our annual meeting in Boulder, CO! Register by 7/31 to apply for workshops and travel grants. Join a great cohort of researchers and community partners for a dynamic 3 days of hazard science. To register: sites.google.com/umich.edu/20...
