As the Jewish novelist Temim Fruchter put it, “These institutions are feeding the narrative that if people are angry that Israel is exacting mass collective punishment, they must hate Jews and Jewish literature.” jewishcurrents.org/what-pen-ame...

What PEN America Got Wrong About Antisemitism in Publishing

Misleading anecdotes, flawed data, and oversimplified analyses are at the heart of a narrative of Jewish exclusion promoted by the free expression…

Jewish Currents not only produced a phenomenal critique of PEN, it also did the rigorous research and fact checking that PEN—my former employer!—failed to do in its “report” on publishing trends for Jewish Lit. And the data is hyperlinked!

I am proud of what Josh and I accomplished in this essay, which took deep reporting and data gathering, and which ultimately runs to a hearty 7000+ words to explain what's really going on with Jewish American and Israeli books in US publishing as PEN America and the ADL run cover for genocide

When Josh Lambert and Dan Sinykin tracked publishing deals since 2000, they found—rather than a decline in Jewish literature—that 2025 was the third-best year of the 21st century for book deals that publicly signaled Jewish or Israeli content. jewishcurrents.org/what-pen-ame...

This isn't just a think piece saying they disagree with PEN America; they actually went back and examined at the data and reporting — including a key claim that a literary agent was selling far fewer books by Jewish and Israeli authors in the US — and found it lacking. Fascinating work.

Working on this reported essay, just published, increasingly took over my life for the last two months. PEN America did a terrible disservice with its sloppy reporting about American Jews and Israelis in publishing in July. Josh Lambert and I tried to do better. jewishcurrents.org/what-pen-ame...

“Regardless of the outcome of some of these elections in Texas and in Michigan, it certainly has an impact on the lives of Muslims living in this country.”
