Lots of stories across Pennsylvania about NIH grant terminations at Pitt and Penn. This is why speaking out matters. Even Congress critters who generally support the administration get pressured into actually supporting their constituents. www.wesanews.org/health-scien...

McCormick, Fetterman question termination of more than 100 health research grants

Pennsylvania’s senators are demanding information about more than 150 health research grants canceled by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services this summer.

Obligations are down 20%, about 1.5 billion. Most of that is due to the $1 billion in withheld funds, though it seems there's another ~$500 million sitting in accounts (~$350 million in the Office of the Director) which may just not be spent. 9/9 is the last day to internally commit funds.

Plot of NSF obligations shows FY26 is well below historic levels.

Grantmaking has leveled off, so it looks like NSF will make around 6,200 new grants—down from an average of ~11,000. That's a historic low, not seen since the 1980s, when NSF was a far smaller organization. Left was our projection three weeks ago, right is the current data.

Right. Vought and Bhattacharya tried to gut NIH in 2025 via stopping spending (Fed Reg bans) and rescission. That failed. Now in 2026, they’re still using bureaucracy inside the agency to try to slow spending. But they need a new way to get the leftover money (meant for science!) out of NIH. 1/

Was looking at Grant Witness and got to thinking... How does American geoscience survive *next* fiscal year given NSF's stated goals for the geoscience directorate and the collapse of other federal funding? What's left?

Plot from Grant Witness of the NSF geoscience directorate funding curves, modified with a marker to show the stated goal for funding in 2027. It's a greater than 75% cut.

Grant Witness has been an invaluable resource for navigating terminations and funding. Much of my reporting — and, judging by how often GW is credited, that of everyone else who's covering these tumultuous times in federal science — would have been far more difficult or impossible without it.

Check out our new @grantwitness.org website! 18 months ago, we launched as a humble Google Sheet listing 8 terminated NIH grants. Today, we’ve launched a new site tracking tens of thousands of grants and new awards at several different agencies. THANK YOU to everyone who's made this possible! 🧵
