This new paper is the death knell for the tired argument that AI models don't memorise their training data. They do. This paper proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt. I wrote up the paper's findings here: dontstealthisblog.substack.com/p/large-lang...

Limitations and exceptions were designed for libraries, archives & research institutions - not for commercial cos who are financially well able to pay for licences - if the creatives who own the work choose to allow it to be sold. If this U.K. government tactic happens it’s underwriting theft.
🚨 It looks like the UK government is gearing up to upend copyright law in favour of AI companies, legalising the theft of their work. This is despite creatives' huge protests, and despite previous proposals being roundly rejected by the public. Please spread the word. 🧵 1/4
We’ve been paying close attention to treaty language around limitations and exceptions at WIPO’s Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights. This is what we’ve been concerned about.
There are rumours it is considering introducing a 'commercial research exception' for AI training. This would be disastrous. It would mean handing the life's work of British creatives to AI companies for free, to train their models on. 2/4

We're not anti-tech, we're anti-theft. If the future of “innovation” depends on stealing creators’ work without asking or paying, that’s not progress - it's stealing, and we shouldn’t accept it. #StealingIsntInnovation www.stealingisntinnovation.com/

I honestly don’t get the value of this company. They hoover up energy and water. Their product constantly gets things wrong and, in extreme cases, coaches people into suicide. And it’s all built on what seems to be malicious and vast intellectual property theft. What does OpenAI offer the world?
