After World War I, New York became a grid of routines. In New York Pavements (1924–25), Hopper turns sidewalks and façades into hard rectangles. A distant nanny dutifully carries out her routine of walking an infant, amplifying the regimented solitude within the pattern.
As maritime safety modernized, architecture followed. In Coast Guard Station, Two Lights, Maine (1927), Hopper treats rescue infrastructure as blunt geometry. Its form and function are made monumental in sunlight.
Hopper often elevated overlooked urban details into sites of reflection. City Roofs (1932) shows an aerial view of New York revealing chimneys, water tanks, and utilitarian structures—a hidden, private skyline suspended above the city streets.
