A fantastic few days of discussion for our IAS Mental Health Humanities Workshop. Just so nice to be in a space and talking about ideas!
Fitting that on World Suicide Prevention day, we (MHHRN) are running an event on mental health humanities, trying to explore how we engage discussions and examinations of mental health through humanities focused approaches.
I finally got round to watching Flashdance last night. Trying to cover films I've heard a lot about but never seen. Visually, great. Plot wise, hmm.
We've just sent round details of our next Adaptation SIG event: Shakespeare and Adaptation on the 29th September at 5-6pm (UK time), with Kibria Nasir and Zeliha Kuruducu. DM for the zoom link!
Kicking off the Modern Masculinities conference today with a keynote from Brendan Gough on Affective Masculinities.
Whilst I was off, a review I'd written of 'Love Me Tender' was published: theconversation.com/in-love-me-t...
In Love Me Tender, a mother’s fight for her child reveals how queerness is still policed
This powerful custody drama questions how society judges queer mothers.

Am taking a month off after today so will be logging out of Bluesky to stop myself from getting involved. Going to try and have a month of not using my brain 🙃
Got round to reading Emily Wilson's review in LRB, expecting far worse. She actually seems to engage with ideas about adaptation beyond the usual we're accustomed to:
Agreed - and what a fantastic novel too. (I can feel Luke cringing already from all this praise)
Very pleased that @lukekennard.bsky.social is on the Booker long list. Good things happen to good people, just on occasion.
How about Emily Wilson talking about Nolan's film with an adaptation scholar? Can we make this happen?? 👀 👀 👀
I'd love to hear her talk about Nolan's adaptation with a film scholar. Essentially, a conversation about what The Odyssey has traditionally meant (the classist perspective) and what this new version is trying to convey (the film studies perspective).
One week left before I'll be taking the longest period of leave I've had since starting in this role. I'm very excited to fully switch off!
Having a great few weeks where I've actually had an idea for some new (academic) writing and it feels so nice to just sit and think. Times like this, I am so happy to have the job I do.

Watching the football this evening and it’s so clear why I do not do this often. My stress level is through the roof.
On behalf of adaptation studies: fidelity is subjective.
Netflix confirm a “faithful” adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Now I love Austen, but I swear to Christ there are other women writers with novels worth adapting.
