Well the finds keep on coming at Burghead 2026! Two incredibly lovely pins from the upper and lower citadels of the fort! These may have been for women’s head coverings - 7th-8th century Pictish fashion!

Absolutely incredible find today- a very substantial mortar stone from the floor layer of a building found next to the middle rampart of the fort at Burghead. Likely to be from an early phase of the fort- 7th century AD perhaps!!

In the upper fort this year we’re focusing on a large building that dates to the 9th century AD. We had some lovely metalwork finds from last year, this year Graham has been uncovering lots of animal bone! Our talk is in the village hall Friday evening at 7.30: open day Saturday 10-4pm!

One of our trenches this year is across the middle rampart of Burghead Pictish fort. This is the least well surviving rampart on the ground but amazingly our team have found really well preserved midden deposits under a huge deposit of rampart collapse!

East Lomond day 8. Today we had an amazing hearth made up of two querns (grinding stones for making flour) that had been broken up to make the kerbstones of a lovely rectangular hearth from the earlier phases of the site. Our team formed a fellowship of the querns to excavate the hearth.

Well that was an amazing first full day at East Lomond. So so many finds for a first day- spindle whorls, Roman pottery, crucibles, and all sorts. And filming with Alice Roberts for her new Channel 4 series! Watch this space!!

Tomorrow we begin the 2026 field season at East Lomond hillfort! Since 2022 we've uncovered an exceptional Pictish settlement sequence (3rd century–c.600 AD), with finds including weaponry, metalworking, a silver handpin, imported E-ware and gaming pieces. Daily updates 6-17 July

One of our students, Konrad, has been up in Shetland. The aim has been to 3D scan all of Shetland Museum and Archives Pictish painted pebbles using photogrammetry. The work has been funded by the Findlay Harris Dick prize at the University of Aberdeen. Thanks to Shetland Amenity Trust.

Day 3 #KingsSeat2026: A huge day! The rampart was far more complex than expected, with multiple charred timbers, intense burning and vitrified stone showing extremely high temperatures during its destruction. Dating samples taken, and finally evidence of occupation inside! 🔥🏺⛏️
