Nature and politics fan-girl. 🦘 Pretty-much obsessed with the tawny frogmouths I share my backyard with. Voting yes was the least we could do, given everything, yet we couldn’t even fricken manage to do that. Privileged to be living in Meanjin, Australia.

The tawny parents here have now gone back for round two. Clearly, a single offspring was not enough to satisfy their commitment to the maintenance of the species 😄.

Dad and youngster on the nest this morning. Youngster with Dad behind. Mum enjoying some me time in the front yard.

It’s been pissing down here for days. Tawnies are out there in the elements, as is their wont. If you look closely, you can see the Teflonesque nature of Mr Tawny’s plumage. Keep the sound off unless you’re keen to hear a lot of rain as well as some inadvertent Radio National.

Nest is now defunct. 🩶 Youngster is spending Day 1 as a big, brave fledging (alongside Mum and Dad of course) in the tree next to the back deck.

From left to right, female adult tawny frogmouth facing left, then fledgling in in middle looking at the camera, and then dad on the right facing right with eyes partly open.

I think he/she is an only child - quite unusual for this mum and dad. Blending in with dad in the second pic. Again, photos are taken from far away on max zoom (see third pic). I’m a bit in awe of this camera’s oomph given how numpty-friendly it is.

Tawny frogmouth chick cuddled up to dad on a branch and looking in the direction of the camera. Chick now sitting in amongst the front of dad, such that you can barely discern him/her.Photo of nest in tree with no zoom (the nest is in the yard behind our next door neighbour’s yard), taken from our back deck.

Sorry, I seem to have deleted my original post. Reposting: A bit concerned about all the ‘moth invasion’ posts on social media expressing irritation/ terror/ lack of understanding about the bogong moth migration to the alpine regions at the moment. stories.acf.org.au/flight-of-th...

Flight of the Bogong moth by ACF

There’s a beautiful synergy between the threatened Bogong moth and the critically-endangered Mountain pygmy possum, showing how the lives of our wildlife can intertwine in ways that amaze us.

Well, I just definitively spotted one white fluffball of a chick in the nest when dad hopped off to grab a bite to eat! I have no idea how to take a decent night-time photo, so no pics I’m afraid.

Shoutout to anyone out there who takes an interest in my obsession with the tawnies who share this patch with us here. I have zero actual photography skill, and to be honest, I would still post pics of them even if no one else was interested, such is my love for and awe of these lovely wild birds.

Female tawny frogmouth asleep on a branch, head facing kind of upwards.

Ms Tawny is spending her days closer to Dad and the nest at the moment. She is top right, while Dad on the nest is the dark, amorphous lump in the bottom left of the pic.

Female tawny frogmouth sitting on a dead branch in the upper foreground, while in the background, in a paperbark tree, is the nest with the male tawny frogmouth on it, though no details can be discerned.

This came up as a featured photo on my phone from last October. How bloody cute! Can’t wait to meet this season’s little batch of next-gen tawnies 🩶
