We need to accept that CBS and CNN are dead and not coming back under current ownership and act accordingly. Elon Musk can blow his money but he can't force you to treat CBS as a legitimate news station.

This argument shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the what, why, and how of adverse possession. Open/notorious use works with land because the owner can and should inspect the land. How do I know if someone is using my or a dead relative's ID? And IDs are by law not transferable property so lol.

9th Cir. declines to extend the property-law concept of adverse possession to a stolen identity. Man lived 30 years using the birth certificate/SSN of a baby who died in infancy. He argued he had become that person because he "had done the work." Held: Nope. cdn.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/op...

There is no basis in law or reason for us to conclude that one may adversely possess the identity of another person. The Supreme Court has held that “[a]n individual’s identity is more than just his name or Social Security number.” Maryland v. King, 569 U.S. 435, 450 (2013). A person’s identity is a part of, not separate from, their personhood. And no matter how long one uses another person’s name, they simply do not become the other person. The identities that Primrose and his wife assumed belonged to infants who were not long for this world. That the infants’ lives were short does not erase their existence or their importance. And no matter what Primrose and his wife did with the infants’ identities, those identities still belonged to the infants who were born on the dates and received the names that were recorded in their birth certificates. It is not at all clear that the infants, their parents, or family were not “harmed” by Primrose’s actions. And Primrose’s contention that he is the one “who had done the work” to establish an identity under the Bobby Edward Fort name by living a life under that name for 30 years is beside the point.

Among other issues, for 1956 there were nine fiction finalists, of which four were women, one of the men (Bowles) was known to be LGBTQ+, and we really can't know for certain who else was LGBTQ+. The only one of the bunch in "the canon" I think is Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man is Hard to Find.

LOL, the gotcha part in the second paragraph is truly hilarious. Who will think of the straight white rightwing men in the literary world? WHO? WHO?

Last week, the longlists for the National Book Awards were announced. Among the 20 authors in the fiction and nonfiction categories, nearly all are straight white males. Most are also on the political right, some even on the far right. Remarkably, mainstream media outlets haven’t reported this, perhaps because they don’t think it’s noteworthy. It’s as if we were living in 1956 rather than 2026. If you’re scratching your head at this “news,” well, it’s because I made it up. Or rather, I inverted the particulars about the authors’ identities and their political views to make a point: If today, as a reader, you recoil at the thought of a time in which minorities were systematically marginalized when it came to the literary world’s public honors (and so much else), shouldn’t you also recoil now that the tables have been almost completely turned? And if you object to the right’s efforts to politicize the arts, won’t you also object when the efforts come from the left?

Democrats were about twenty-five years late figuring this out, but drafting mainline ministers to run in red states is a fairly good defense against some of the more idiotic accusations that get thrown at "the left" and the GOP's attempted monopolization as the party of God(c).
