The Luna Moth (Actias luna) is fairly common in Nova Scotia, though it is seldom seen by people because of its nocturnal life. While this beautiful insect may look like a butterfly, its feathery antennae are a dead giveaway. It’s definitely a moth – one of the largest in North America.

This means that we require a special permit to hold the jaw in our collection. Look at the large triangular, serrated teeth in both the upper and lower jaws – telltale signs of this ferocious predator. Object#:88358 You can see this Great White Shark jaw on display @mnhnovascotia.bsky.social

These jaw bones come from a 272-kilogram Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) that was caught in a fish weir near Economy, Nova Scotia. Great Whites are rarely spotted in the Bay of Fundy and are listed as endangered by the Canadian Species at Risk Act.
