As a kid, I participated in remembrance ceremonies a lot. Traveled to Holland and Vimy as a kid to sing at war monuments and memorials, singing Never Again. In 2002, it all changed -- "not so much a vigil as a war rally" was how the ceremonies now went, because Canada was in Afghanistan.

They are our best technology for escaping some very complicated social problems. But we need to agree on the most basic fundamentals. My essay:

It was appalling to see the way protesters taunted those mourning the October 7th victims. That is not activism.
