Earlier, we had the honor of welcoming five incredibly talented Plymouth-Canton students to the Capitol! They were named winners of the New York Times’ 100-Word Narrative Contest— all from Ms. Olivia Foster’s 21st Century Global Issues & Literature courses at PCEP.

In March, we had the honor of welcoming five incredibly talented Plymouth-Canton students to the Michigan State Capitol!

Sarah Moore and Dana Sassine were named winners of the New York Times’ (@nytimes ) 100-Word Narrative Contest, and Madeline Lenk, Patrick Ward, and Ye Won Paek were recognized as finalists — all from Ms. Olivia C. Foster’s 21st Century Global Issues & Literature courses at PCEP (@pccs_official )

Chosen out of more than 12,000 global submissions, these young writers achieved something truly extraordinary. I was proud to present each student and Ms. Foster with a special State of Michigan Tribute, announce them as my guests on the House floor, and give them a tour of our state’s historic Capitol building. Their creativity and achievements are nothing short of inspiring.

👏 Congratulations to these remarkable young leaders!

Progress isn’t permanent unless we defend it. Today I stood alongside survivors, students, parents, and advocates to say: enough is enough. Let me be clear: you can’t say you care about families while repealing the laws that keep them alive.

Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in America. That should shake us all.

Let me be clear: you can’t say you care about families while repealing the laws that keep them alive.

We will fight. We will vote. We will keep showing up. And we will win.

Today, we saw yet another page from the GOP extremist agenda that aims to divide Michiganders & tear families apart. Speaker Hall’s silence is deafening. While Republicans are busy looking backwards, House Dems are looking forward to actually helping people & providing relief.

Michigan families shouldn’t have to wonder if their healthcare, childcare, or schools will stay open. Trump’s reckless funding freeze creates chaos for working people while the wealthy remain untouched. Michigan families are depending on us. We must move forward with urgency & responsibility.

Today was a whirlwind, but what an incredible honor it is to serve my district and the people of Michigan as the newly elected House Democratic Leader for the 103rd Legislature. Together, we can build brighter future for all Michiganders. Let’s get to work!

To my district and the people of Michigan- What happened yesterday in the House should not have happened. It was not just disappointing, but one of the greatest failures for our constituents who elect us to show up to work and vote on pending legislation. 🧵1/3

Accountability matters. Just as we hold opioid makers and predatory industries liable, firearm manufacturers must also be held to the same standard—no industry is above the law when it comes to public safety.

As the lead sponsor of HB 6184 I am proud to have testified to ensure the firearm industry is held accountable and communities across Michigan are safer.

Our Michigan volunteers are keeping the pressure on state lawmakers to pass critical gun safety legislation before the end of a special session, including bills to ban untraceable ghost guns and to hold bad actors in the gun industry accountable. Go, Michigan! #MomsAreEverywhere #MILeg

Honored to visit Mount Vernon, the historic home of President George Washington. This visit was a powerful moment to reflect on the leadership and vision that shaped our nation, while also acknowledging the deep injustices of slavery that are part of this history.

Racism and hate speech have no place in Michigan, or our legislative process. The vile comments made during this testimony are a stark reminder of the work we must do to ensure our Capitol reflects the values of respect and inclusion. We will not be intimidated.

One of the silver linings of this very unfortunate incident at the MI State Capitol on Thursday is that it may have been a wake up call to some about the fact that racism is still very much alive in our country. Thanks to all who have spoken up about this! michiganadvance.com/2024/11/15/p...
