Making a game that actually runs on PlayStation 1 and Sega Dreamcast. https://edw.is/

Heartbreaking: yet another programmer/tech influencer who was skeptical about AI is now shilling it. Heartwarming: after I started talking more about how much I hate AI, several people reached out to me and said that my position is refreshing and seeing it made them happy…

Just had the most clutch moment in UFO 50 while trying to get the cherry in Planet Zoldath. (Some context: the game is randomly generated, you need to beat it under 20 minutes to get the achievement. I was one resource short and only had 2 minutes to find it...)

We need a variant of MIT license which prohibits LLMs or vibe-coders from using your code. Many people would ignore this part, but maybe it’ll drive some bots away? We need to stop playing nicely. I don’t care if it drives some people away from the open source code I put on my Github.

Getting into city planning/greyboxing stuff is extremely exciting for me, as I've never gotten so far into developing a "real" game, haha. And Dreamcast allows me to model a lot more "carelessly" first. This scale and topology would never fly on PS1...

I’m greyboxing… it’s really a cool way to plan levels, huh… 😍 The colors ended up looking kinda like Jet Set Radio and now the untextured/undetailed level is kind of a cool vibe on its own? Also I made the greyboxing process more pleasant for myself… (cont.)

I ran out of VRAM on Dreamcast (it only has 8MB...) 😭 So I built this cool texture viewer in Dear ImGui (running on Dreamcast!). It allows me to sort the textures by their size and find the ones which need to be optimized. (P.S. The footage is upscaled 4x in Deecy emulator)

Some progress of my 🌀Sega Dreamcast game. Basically, I finally have all the parts necessary to make the real game! I made this silly fake ending to test my cutscene system and pretend the game has an ending.

DOOM running on cat's PC in my ꩜Dreamcast game (direct HW capture). Recorded this again using RetroTINK 4K Pro so that it's easier to see what's going on. Been kind of in a state of "where do you go from there..." for the past few days, still can't believe it worked.😂

Btw, one thing I can afford now on Dreamcast is using textures more, e.g. on the chair. On PS1 a pattern like that would be almost invisible because of the small screen res. When I added the fabric texture to this untextured chair, I was really amazed how good it looked.

Dreamcast is so powerful... It's not just an image on the screen. You can interact with the in-game PC with the Dreamcast mouse and keyboard. (I won't copy Win95 for the final look, want to design my own fake OS :D)

Mind-boggling CRT simulation on Dreamcast. (I figured out how to render to texture. This will be huge for some things I want to do... 👀) P.S. Notice the scanlines and how the light color on the cat, mattress and PS1 changes dynamically.

My game running on PS1, Sega Dreamcast and PC at the same time! The PC version is where it all began. First with OpenGL and then Vulkan version. This is the only version with dynamic shadows, btw. :D

I love Blender so much 😍 I had this huge art block/anxiety about modelling anything new for my Dreamcast game... so making a "throwaway" level in a single day helped. Just open Blender and start modelling stuff NOW.
