We use the law to protect life on Earth. Ecojustice is Canada’s largest environmental law charity. From coast to coast to coast, we have a proven history of winning key cases and securing environmental protections.

Because we give U.S. coal barons a free ride, we don't have port capacity for Canadian exports that could produce cleaner jobs that build a better future for all.

Instead, Canadian communities like White Rock and Delta bear the health, environmental, and safety costs in return for nothing: no tariffs, no taxes, and minimal jobs.

Under the Canadian Net Zero Emissions Accountability Act (CNZEAA), the federal government is legally required to do three things:   1. Set science-based climate targets  2. Have a credible plan to achieve them, and   3. Regularly report on its progress.

“The situation with Trump isn't easy. I'm doing a bachelor's in economics, so I hear a lot about this. I think it's unfortunate that the approach the PM is taking [...] because even more conservative agencies, such as the IEA, has projected that oil demand will peak in the coming years."

Not treating the climate crisis with urgency now will disrupt global stability through more deadly & costly extreme weather events, more inhospitable places & climate refugees, etc. Add this to the long list of environmental rollbacks by the Carney gov’t (compiled by @ecojusticecanada.bsky.social):

Canada will not hit carbon emission reduction targets set under the Trudeau government, Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a video posted to YouTube. He argued that downgrading the country’s climate-change ambitions is necessary for global stability and national unity.

“You cannot abandon the map and still expect to reach your destination. Yet that’s exactly what the federal government has done with its 2030 climate plan.” - Charlie Hatt, Ecojustice Climate Director

"The filing describes climate change as an "existential threat," noting that Canada is warming at roughly twice the global rate, while temperatures in its north are rising nearly three times faster, according to the court documents reviewed by AFP."

« J’ai un attachement profond pour ma ville natale, Sainte-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier. C’est un attachement qui me pousse à vouloir la protéger », a témoigné la jeune militante Marie Maltais.

“Prime Minister Carney has said that climate action is a moral duty and an economic imperative, and we agree it is both of those things. But it’s also something more – it is a legal obligation. [...] It is time for accountability before the law.“ - Charlie Hatt, Ecojustice Climate Director

"When political leaders say they are committed to climate action while dismantling the very policies needed to achieve it, young people notice," said Sophia Mathur. "We are the ones who will be facing and living with the consequences." www.cbc.ca/news/politic... #CDNpoli #Carney #ClimateAction

S/O to our former intern Shirley, who is helping to lead this important legal challenge to hold the federal govt accountable for its climate commitments! Inspiring to see young climate leaders standing up for a more just future and demanding the ambitious action that science (and the law) require.

THANK YOU!!! Climate change is the largest debt to be passed from one generation to the next in our history. Younger and future generations are poised to inherit the messes we’ve made, but failed to clean up. That’s not a legacy of which Canadians can be proud. Wishing you good luck!!
