I said a few weeks ago that Canada joining the EU was now a likelier scenario than the accession of any of the Western Balkan countries, including Montenegro. That makes geopolitical sense for an Ottawa, it makes sense for Brussels, but…

The elections in Serbia will not be free nor fair. There will be no change in government, alas. The question thus is not if Vucic will hijack the democratic process (he will), it’s what consequences are the U.S. and EU willing to impose on him as a result?
An uncanny homage to Mitterand’s approach to the genocide in Bosnia by Macron tonight, not fully 48 hours after the state-sponsored Mladic funeral in Belgrade.
The deification of Mladic and the glorification of the genocide in Bosnia by Belgrade and Banja Luka is a baptism of blood. It aims to make the Serbian public complicit in the horrors of the 90s and, more importantly, to socialize them to embrace future rounds of violence.
Tens of thousands are expected to attend the funeral of the genocidaire Mladic in Belgrade today, who will be buried with full military honors by the Serbian state. All of this for a thug who lived and died as a coward, as I wrote for @newlinesmag.bsky.social. newlinesmag.com/spotlight/th...

The fourth annual Sarajevo Security Conference begins in front a full house at the historic Vijećnica, at moment in which Bosnia, the region, and the transatlantic community stand astride an extraordinary combination of geopolitical inflection points. Let us lead with our values, friends.
Serbia’s President says the remains of genocidaire Mladic to arrive in the country today and that “tens of thousands” are expected to attend his funeral. There can be no illusions any longer about the nature of this regime, and its direct threat to Bosnia. www.nedeljnik.rs/vucic-preuze...

Good morning from Sarajevo, once more. I am looking forward to participating in the fourth annual Sarajevo Security Conference later this week. Above all, I am very proud of the team which has established this city a leading site for contemporary transatlantic debate. Onwards, friends.
“Ratko Mladić is dead, but Bosnia and Herzegovina is a sovereign, internationally recognized state whose capital, Sarajevo, is today one of the premier global destinations, a city of festivals and celebrations and life.” THIS is how you write about a monstrous war criminal.
I was asked by @newlinesmag.bsky.social to write about the death of Bosnian Serb genocidaire Ratko Mladić. He was a war criminal but above all he was a coward. And it is on his cowardice, and the courage of those he sought to exterminate, that we should reflect. newlinesmag.com/spotlight/th...

Really excellent. Best thing I read on the death of a convicted war criminal and genocidaire Ratko Mladić. May thousands of his victims rest in peace and the survivors find some small solace that he died as he lived - a pathetic coward. Thank you @jasminmuj.bsky.social for writing this.
Editor’s Pick: Ratko Mladić died last week, serving a life sentence for genocide. He tried to destroy Bosnia — its people, its history, its libraries, its very possibility as a country. Bosnia outlived him. @jasminmuj.bsky.social on the house Mladić could not destroy.
Serbia’s state security, clearly acting in response to genocidaire Mladic’s death, harassed the Bosnian national basketball team in transit through Belgrade and intentionally delayed their equipment to sabotage the team’s training ahead of a key World Cup qualifying tie. istraga.ba/nakon-sto-je...

The Iceland referendum result will not significantly influence the membership prospects of the Western Balkans, including Montenegro. Their odds of joining the EU in the near term (i.e. the next decade) remain at near-zero. Brussels and the capitals have made that clear.
It makes some people uncomfortable but I made the decision a while back that the vast array of issues I care about are little helped by my wearing 100 hats. I still donate and support myriad causes but I speak and write about only a small set because it's how I think I make the most impact.
I appreciate the sentiments of many European officials today who say, in response to the glorification of the genocidaire Mladic, “this is why [this] Serbia does not belong in the EU.” I agree. But this is not sufficient.

Worth remembering that Mladic was only able to accomplish his acts of astonishing evil because European countries and the US sat by and watched. With the British govt the most determined of all to avoid decisive action.
The convicted Bosnian Serb genocidaire Ratko Mladic has died in a prison cell. He has died in a prison cell, while despite all of his murderous efforts little Bosniak girls and little Bosniak boys are again being born all across Bosnia and Herzegovina. You lost, Ratko.
The genocidaire Ratko Mladic and his paymasters in Belgrade left Sarajevo a bloody ruin. A capital city starved and devastated for four years. Today, it is the pearl of Europe once more; the site of festivals, celebrations, graduations, joys great and plenty. You lost, Ratko.

The US-Canada relationship will not be repaired in the near term, nor will the transatlantic relationship. That is to everyone’s detriment, Americans above all, if only because they are still least aware of the true cost.
The U.S. should recognize the secession of the RS entity from Bosnia because its population has collapsed, its leadership is in bed with the Chinese, so that an independent RS can recognize Kosovo and U.S. can build a military base outside of Banja Luka. Am I having a stroke?!
