We suggest three ways forward: • Monitor biodiversity outcomes alongside spatial targets like 30×30. • Require reporting of take status to the WDPA. • Incorporate biodiversity explicitly when designing MPAs. @sfugradstudies.bsky.social
Another major finding: Much of the reported MPA coverage comes from sites where take regulations aren't reported to the World Database on Protected Areas. Only about 34% of countries report take status for any of their MPAs, making it difficult to evaluate how much effective protection exists.
Some of our key findings: • Only 6 threatened sharks and rays have more than 10% of their range protected by no-take MPAs. • Only 24% of threatened sharks and 18% of threatened rays have over 1% of their species range covered by no-take MPAs @sfubiosciences.bsky.social @earth2ocean.bsky.social
