We are devoted to ensuring free speech, equal rights, and other civil liberties in D.C. Press inquiries: media@acludc.org #DCStatehood https://www.acludc.org/

Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that President Trump can't ban reporters from CNN, MSNOW, and Politico from the White House while the case proceeds. The government can't punish journalists because it doesn't like their reporting. This is a win for our First Amendment rights.

Today, D.C. is in court fighting to end President Trump's unnecessary and undemocratic deployment of National Guard troops to the nation's capital. Flooding D.C. streets with military troops untrained for domestic law enforcement only makes our communities less safe.

NEW: Today, the government dismissed its appeal in our free speech case defending Accountability NOW USA's right to criticize Trump and call for his impeachment and removal from office. Political speech is protected speech. It's why the First Amendment exists in the first place.

Off white quote graphic from ACLU-D.C. staff attorney Aditi Shah with dark red text that reads: "The district court correctly decided that the government cannot silence speech it dislikes by labeling it 'obscene' or a 'threat.'

With the government’s appeal dismissed, the district court’s ruling stands unhindered." The ACLU-D.C. logo is in the bottom left corner.

Freedom of expression is the cornerstone of our democracy. When our First Amendment rights are infringed upon, so too is our freedom to exercise other fundamental rights, like the right to vote. That's why we say no to a permanent fence around Lafayette Park.

A new ACLU report details how the Trump administration is not only fueling violence but also undermining our democratic system of checks and balances, by defying court orders, attacking Congressional independence, and threatening civil society. Read here: https://bit.ly/3TplX0n

This LGBTQ History Month we remember the generations of advocates, heroes and icons who paved the path for us. As LGBTQ rights face increasingly dangerous attacks from politicians across the nation, we’re not slowing down in the fight for our right to exist as we are without political interference.

If anyone understands the mission of the National Guard, it's Ret. Major General Randy Manner. And for Ret. Major General Manner, President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops to D.C. is a complete misuse of the force and in contrast with democratic values. https://bit.ly/3VivC9D

Congress: Support D.C. Statehood Now

D.C. statehood would grant full and equal rights to over 700,000 residents currently denied representation. Tell Congress to take action now.

This Washington elects the people who make local decisions. The other Washington deserves that same right. More than 700,000 D.C. residents should have the power to govern themselves. D.C. needs statehood.

Collage in oranges and blues showing the U.S. Capitol, a protester with a D.C. statehood sign. Text reads "From one Washington to another, it’s time to support freedom in our nation’s capital. Tell Congress: D.C. statehood now." ACLU‑WA logo.Advocacy poster by ACLU-WA calling for D.C. statehood. Text reads, "Washingtonians in the PNW value civic participation and accountable government. D.C. residents should have the same opportunity to make local decisions through leaders they elect. Because Washington, D.C. is not legally recognized as a state, the people of D.C. face taxation without representation. They pay federal and local taxes but have no vote in Congress. It’s time for D.C. statehood."
