The German Federal Statistical Office has released death count data for the week of extreme heat in June. Mortality was up 30%, with around 5500 excess deaths. No time to lose to put emission reductions as the top priority, and become very serious about adaptation to worst-case outcomes.

🆕 New global evidence shows heatstroke is highly heterogeneous and often under‑recognized. Our MCC study across 34 countries finds mortality ranges from <1 to nearly 6 deaths per million, with heatstroke representing only a small share of total heat‑related deaths. #heatstroke #climate

Yet another report of the stark impact of human-induced climate change on recent heat-related mortality in Europe. We need to promptly get out of fossil fuels and become very serious about adaptation to prevent further escalating trends.

#ClimateChange-driven summer heat caused 16,500 additional deaths across Europe, study estimates Malcolm Mistry & Pierre Masselot explain that cities & societies need to adapt to #ExtremeHeat but reducing greenhouse gas emissions is critical. @lshtm-dash.bsky.social www.lshtm.ac.uk/newsevents/n...

Out now: our new study shows that climate change caused nearly 1,700 heat-related deaths in Zürich over 50 years. We assessed the effects of changing vulnerability to heat, heat-mortality within and outside of heatwaves, and the contribution of individual companies' emissions to heat deaths.

Bird populations in the tropics have dropped by roughly a third since 1980 due to intensifying heat extremes from #ClimateChange, with some species declining by over 50 percent, according to new study published in @natecoevo.nature.com. 👇 youtube.com/shorts/Gfx-U... #biodiversity

I highly recommend this thread. The abnormally high sea surface temperatures in the Western Mediterranean might be an early warning of record heat extremes to unfold over Europe this summer, similarly to 2003.

The Western Mediterranean has been record warm recently, shown here for the June averages from ERA5. This much warmth in the Mediterranean may predict a brutally hot summer for Europe. 1/ 🧵🧪🌊

Climate change also makes peaceful protest more difficult. The march on the occasion of the UN summit in Sevilla last night started out at 40C. But seeing the ‘global village’ demanding climate justice and dept cancellation was worth the sweat.

Influencia excepcional.

And the heat will only get worse. In Spain we have been experiencing anomalies of 5-10 degrees in June. Birds are falling from their nests. My 10-year-old daughter told me last night that she was so sorry for all the animals suffering due to humanity's fault. It is heart-breaking.
