230 years ago today 9 October 1796 the ship the London wrecked off Rapparee Cove. The ship was bringing prisoners of war from St Lucia. Those who survived joined over 2000 other Caribbean prisoners of war at Portchester Castle. Today we commemorated all of them with a new plaque. 🗃️

A plaque on the wall in the watergate at Portchester. In remembrance of the arrival of Caribbean prisoners of war at Portchester Castle in 1796. Over 2000 men, women and children from across the Caribbean and Africa were imprisoned here. Installed by SV2G with the support of the university of Warwick and in partnership with English Heritage
