The world will talk to death about gender without ever showing interest in the collective wisdom of people who have moved through the world as different genders. It tells you something that even as transness became a political issue sucking up billions of dollars, this fact remains.

I'll be honest, I mostly do read books by women and LGBTQ+. creator because I had my fill of "male lit" in my early years. And the genre of "male lit" talked about here is extremely uninteresting to me. Now, if it's William Gibson or Stephen King or Terry Pratchett? Yes.

Okay, I am looking at this gendered reading piece by Ross Barkan and I have many thoughts and questions. Part of the thesis is this:

A more challenging question can be asked: If more books were published by men with explicitly masculine themes, would there actually be a wider male readership? It’s the old chicken-and-egg dilemma. The audience won’t emerge because the product isn’t there, and the product isn’t there because the audience is elsewhere. Men, obviously, can read and enjoy books by women, but there is the sticky biological reality that, on balance, women will probably prefer reading women, and men may prefer reading men. Boys, especially, seem to long for male teachers and role models in the classroom. As they age, and if they want to read, they might be drawn to the fiction of writers like Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Carver, and McMurtry. They might want literature that, at the bare minimum, seems masculine.

My partner was just telling me about people's less than thrilled reactions to the new CARRIE adap and I have to say that based on what I heard was being changed, it's a big NOPE for me. I get adaptive changes, this sounds like it's not really CARRIE anymore.

I have always been deeply and profoundly anti-death penalty. The state should never, ever, have that power. Imho it's one of the reasons we have the police state we do. A publicized execution is monstrous and if you disagree you are welcome to unfollow and block I won't be debating.

I think one of the many problems with the people who really believe* the "AI" thing AND the people just grifting is that their ethics are so corrupted that they don't think anything they do matters/is wrong. They're, -at best- convinced the apocalypse is nigh so fuck it, do whatever!

But not the CSAM, grooming, delusions, or suicidal ideation encouraging. These programs don't have feelings. There's no self to abuse or harm. But this is partly because they don't care about humans AND to further the marketing that this is real "AI". Gross.

What are the candies you only saw at Halloween when you were growing up? In my youth there were Root Beer Barrels, Smarties (the American kind, like SweeTarts), Necco Wafers, and Laffy Taffy... All rarely seen except in a big plastic pumpkin.
