‘Some wicked women, perverted by the Devil, seduced by the illusions and phantasms of demons, believe and profess themselves in the hours of the night to ride upon certain beasts with Diana, the moon-goddess of pagans’ (C9th AD) #wyrdwednesday

The yellow horned poppy/bruisewort has golden yellow flowers followed by seedpods up to 30cm long that curl like elephant tusks. Grows along the Sussex coastline in shingle, this one at Cuckmere where the river meets the sea. #wyrdwednesday #folklore
The story goes… St Dunstan was doing smithy work one day when a seductive young maiden came to him. He wasn’t tricked and bid her come closer. Then he took his tongs from the fire and grabbed her by the nose, whereupon the Devil’s true form was revealed. #wyrdwednesday #folklore
Thanks to Jo Goddard for Up With The Larks yesterday morning at Rottingdean Windmill. Lovely to sing there again this year with fellow folk singers Sandra Manning Jones and Jo, watch Frankenstein’s Morris. Seemed weird to be home by 8am. Photo of me by @pixelsonapage.bsky.social 🙏 Barry P
The belief is very common... that violent grieving for the dead will prevent their resting in their graves in peace. There is a song called The Unquiet Grave, which turns on this belief. (1868) ‘Oh who sits weeping on my grave And will not let me sleep?’ #wyrdwednesday rest
Join us for sunrise singing at Rottingdean Windmill on Sunday 26th July I’m singing with Jo Goddard and Sandra Manning-Jones. 5.18am start 🌞 Free but book a place to come… bit.ly/4yyiXyk #sussex #rottingdean #folkmusic

Let your brain swim about in the beachy colours & tell me your fave exhibit in this tiny museum if you fancy it🪸:

As it’s St George’s Day I thought I’d share a local dragon legend… Jacqueline Simpson (The Folklore of Sussex) tells the story of the Lyminster knucker. I went to Lyminster a number of years ago to try and find the knuckerhole. The illuminated stained glass window is situated inside St Mary’s.
