10-minute @noaa.gov #GOESEast (GOES-19) Near-Infrared images showed the shadow of today's solar eclipse: cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl...
1-minute @noaa.gov #GOESEast (GOES-19) Visible images with time-matched plots of SPC Storm Reports showed thunderstorms that produced wind gusts as high as 97 mph in Illinois and hail as large as 3.00" in diameter in Indiana. cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl... #ILwx #INwx
Deerocrat and Rabbpublican actually agreeing on something in our front yard this evening.
1-minute #GOESWest GeoColor RGB images with an overlay of Next Generation Fire System polygons showed the rapid spread of the #OldTrailsFire, which was forcing evacuations in parts of the Spokane area. More on the CIMSS Satellite Blog: cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl... #WAwx
The Justice Department is admitting that a $14 million renovation on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC, was flawed, and is dropping the criminal case against a former Olympian that accused him of damaging the pool, according to a new court filing. https://cnn.it/3RJJnwj
In a before/after (13 July vs 29 July) comparison of Landsat-8 "Natural Color RGB" images, a faint signature of the EF3-rated tornado damage path could be seen in the Menasha WI area (a transition from green shades to tan shades, due to tree/vegetation damage). #WIwx
1-minute @noaa.gov #GOESEast (GOES-19) Visible images revealed mesovortices within the eye of #Genevieve as it was rapidly intensifying to a Category 4 hurricane in the East Pacific. GLM Flash Points showed intermittent lightning activity within the eyewall.
Growing up in South Dakota, I only ate at Taco Bell. Where this was not on the menu.
In South Dakota, tiger meat is the Plains version of tartare — raw ground beef seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, spices, onion and sometimes bell pepper, then scooped onto saltines and Club crackers. Some joke it’s “budget-cut tartare.”
1-minute GOES-18 True Color RGB images showing the hazy plume of resuspended volcanic ash (from the 1912 eruption of Novarupta-Katmai) that was being lofted from the surface by strong NW winds and carried toward Kodiak Island. #AKwx
"Rapid scan" satellite imagery from this event was available every 5-10 minutes -- which isn't quite as impressive as the 1-minute (or 30-second) GOES imagery often available today. cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl...
July 23, 2010: The United States' record largest hailstone fell near Vivian, South Dakota. The stone was measured at an incredible 8.0" in diameter and had a weight of 1.9375 lbs. It was spawned by a powerful supercell that produced many other stones 6" or larger.
The best part about GOES-19 not sending data all morning is that I didn't have to see how bad the wildfire smoke looks -- but now that data is flowing again, omFUg...
1-min @noaa.gov GOES-19 Visible images with an overlay of the Fire Mask derived product showed numerous wildfires that forced a closure of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in far northeastern Minnesota -- more on the CIMSS Satellite Blog: cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl... #MNwx
2.5-minute Himawari-9 Visible and Infrared images showing the eyewall of Super Typhoon #Bavi affecting the island of Rota. Animation will periodically update at cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl...
Nighttime NOAA-20 (mislabeled as NPP) VIIRS Day/Night Band image valid at 1525 UTC on 05 July, showing the large eye of Super Typhoon #Bavi as it was approaching the island of Rota. "Side-lighting" by the Moon was brightly illuminating the western eyewall.
2.5-minute Himawari-9 Infrared images show that the eye of 155-knot Category 5 Super Typhoon #Bavi is on track to pass very near the island of Rota, between Saipan and Guam.
Sunrise on Category 5 Super Typhoon #Bavi east of Guam, as seen in Himawari-9 Visible and Infrared images.
The #AspenAcresFire actually produced 2 brief #pyrocumulonimus (pyroCb) clouds after 2300 UTC on 01 July, exhibiting cloud-top infrared window brightness temperatures in the -40s C (blue pixels, right panel). #COwx
The Aspen Acres fire certainly looks very active on shortwave IR satellite imagery, with an intense hot spot and what looks to be periodic PyroCu.
1-minute @noaa.gov #GOESWest Day Fire RGB images showed the rapid growth of the wind-driven #SnyderFire, which merged with other fires in far western Colorado on 27 June - and tragically resulted in the death of 3 firefighters. More on the CIMSS Satellite Blog: cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/satellite-bl...
