One of the challenges to studying suicide, perhaps the hidden challenge, is that using sociological theory to make sense and explain an individual suicide is often deemed unsympathetic or worse. Arday's story is tragic, yes, but there are some fascinating sociological lessons in the event & response

A good lesson in handwringing about pre primary hypothetical polls. Before he won, Roger’s was trouncing him hypothetically. But now we see it will be a real race and my guess is he will win bc who wants a republican for anything?
Michigan voters are divided between Republican Mike Rogers and Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, polls show. A post-primary survey finds Rogers with a narrow lead, but El-Sayed has a four-point edge among Michiganders who will “definitely vote.”
would say I’m shocked that dude took his own life, but I mean, he built a completely fabricated life for whatever reasons and when it collapsed the shame and completely destruction of his reputation meant suicide was the most likely outcome. No is really to blame. It’s a tragedy for everyone
Politicians & commentators often claim government is getting bigger & bigger. Supposedly, government today is bigger than in the past. There is even theory that government inevitably & automatically grows. What is the reality on government size? New Substack: open.substack.com/pub/davebrad...

Speaking as a sociologist, I had never heard of Jason Arday until this whole scandal. So I’m not really sure he was “on top” of the discipline.
If you're attending #ASA2026 in NYC later this week/next week, please join us bright & early on Monday for a session on pronatalism.

The first review by Emily Wilson was understandable and fair, but this second one belies insecurity &, quite frankly, an expert in one thing thinking their an expert in all things. It is the sort of pedantic patronizing commentary masquerading as high-brow critique ca.news.yahoo.com/odyssey-tran...

This place, like X, reminds me why I rather not know my neighbors. So many terrible takes that are designed to make you feel shame for doing this or that. Cultural commentary that reflects the posters own trauma and hang ups.
I'll tell you what social media has done to people: it has really thinned their skin to the point that they cannot take a critique without feeling like they are in 2nd grade on the playground again. No grit, no grind.

A reasonable set of thoughts here. The basic logic is right and I would agree the discipline is hostile to studying phenomenon for the sake of studying it and understanding it better. The lazy critique is always ‘what about power’ or ‘what about [insert marginal group here?’ It belies the fact that
#Sociology has been in the news a lot lately. A new piece just dropped in @wsj.com, featuring some comments from me. Per usual, they only used a few sentences from the hour+ conversation. Let me to expand a bit below. tldr: my answer to the titular question is an emphatic "no"🧵

This half time show is both evidence of how isomorphism works AND the subtle but real variation that context provides in ways that negate homogeneity. no Super Bowl could ever have k pop or shakira. It would be confusing. As would a ballad by a canadian.
As always, Neil has something insightful to say. Having spent time in the US and Canadian academic and national systems, I disagree with Saad's assessment on both grounds. I also don't know that America's "full-throated say whatever you want even if its a bald-faced lie" free speech is superior to

This about summarizes the madness of social media. ChatGPT is maybe making us dumber as a species, but not before social media started the job
I don't use these chatbots myself, but not using chatbots isn't the only thing to avoid if you want to fully retain your ability to think independently. Outsourcing your critical thinking to internet pile ons is every bit as dangerous as outsourcing it to chatbots.
