Packing for gay destination is so silly what you do mean I need a suitcase full of novelty crop tops
I’m fascinated by the circling of the wagons following Wilson’s review. @elazic.bsky.social on one aspect of this: “Refusing to engage with Nolan’s The Odyssey as a film, with its own rules and organising principles…perpetuates the idea that cinema is inherently inferior to literature and poetry.”
Emily Wilson's piece on Christopher Nolan's THE ODYSSEY for the LRB went viral and was received very positively by many — but not by virtually every film critic I know. For @animusmagazine.bsky.social I wrote about why: animus-magazine.ghost.io/a-tale-as-ol...
It’s incredible, and a brilliant example of how filmmakers use form to make meaning. From its very first frame, North by Northwest tells you not to trust everything you think you know!
The first time I saw the green logo I thought I was watching the wrong movie 😂
Saul Bass’ arresting, kinetic title design, beginning with its electric green and gray variation of MGM’s logo, immediately pulls you into North by Northwest’s thrills. Its linear graphics offer the first of the film’s many surprises as they fade into a midtown Manhattan facade.
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should.”
We are SO back.
Gorgeous photo by Valerio Greco! 😍😍
We've been nominating LAUGHING GAS (1907) -- the joyfully anarchic, anti-racist silent film comedy starring Bertha Regustus -- every year! Please cast your vote for LAUGHING GAS! It's included in Cinema's First Nasty Women! 📀 More info below....
The way that John Leguizamo is in both The Odyssey and the plumbing movie
My take on today's Odyssey controversy is, with all respect to everyone involved, that plumbers generally shouldn't review movies about plumbing.
Adaptations, as Wilson writes, “needn’t and shouldn’t follow the original with anything like the exactitude of a translation.” But in her takedown of The Odyssey she is more interested in critiquing a film that she wants, not what Nolan made. That might make for conversation, but it’s bad criticism.
