On GOTTA GET OUT, The Linda Lindas’ latest and best album

…but GOTTA GET OUT, The Linda Lindas’ third album, is an impressively assured blend of styles while sticking broadly within a power pop/pop punk sensibility. Plus some hardcore on a couple tracks! The web of instrumentation and vocals belies their youth, as ever. It’s hard to not sound patronizing or make them sound like a novelty act when discussing The Linda Lindas’ age, but to be clear and reiterate this sentiment, GOTTA GET OUT isn’t “good for a bunch of teenagers.” It’s a rousing album that blows the work of rock/punk establishment acts working today totally out of the water. Listening to GOTTA GET OUT reinforces the idea that new artists can channel identifiable influences while feeling totally fresh and serves as The Linda Lindas’ best album…although they’ve still got a lot of time to top it.

Keep hoping someone’s gonna pick my favorite Cecil B. DeMille film from 1915: THE GOLDEN CHANCE, which was filmed at the same time as THE CHEAT and is (IMHO) superior in every way but one (no Sessue Hayakawa performance). Not this week! still a great listen though.

On EVERY THIRD THOUGHT, David Duchovny’s best album

Although I’ve seemed to generally describe an improvement for Duchovny’s successive releases, as you can see, the quality of the records jump around a bit over his small yet growing body of work. EVERY THIRD THOUGHT also defies the sophomore slump possibility (although that usually denotes an incredible debut) by being an impressively and simultaneously spacey and poppy album. The title track has those latter hooks but it’s standout track “Spiral” that crescendos into a rousing jam; it’s definitely Duchovny’s most unique and best song. EVERY THIRD THOUGHT isn’t exactly a standout work even in the mire of late 2010s rock music, but maybe it is as one practiced by a (to be clear, good) actor turning to the form late in life, and it stands as Duchovny’s best album.

On LIKE A PRAYER, Madonna’s best album

The gospel tenor that is immediately struck by Andraé Crouch’s choir, Prince’s presence on a few tracks throughout, the near-conclusion of Madonna’s work with formative collaborators Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard (the latter would work on I’M BREATHLESS), and the general blend of upbeat pop construction with lyrics deeply wrestling with her Catholic upbringing and social injustice make LIKE A PRAYER a “pop album” with a gravitas that has rarely been matched, let alone exceeded. As was intimated with my description of BEDTIME STORIES, my approach to these pieces is to consider the question “If I was only allowed to experience one work of art from [insert artist], what would it be?” and cascade from there. And concerning Madonna, I can think of no finer work of art to turn to than LIKE A PRAYER, the ultimate album from an iconic pop star with a body of work that, even at its nadir, defies standards and inane pop music drudgery, and at its best, transcends easy genre definitions into a realm of uber-catchy, body-moving, and emotional tunes.
