Lyme Disease Biobank

@lymebiobank.bsky.social

Non-profit providing human biological samples to investigators developing better tests for Lyme and tick-borne infections. Whole blood, serum, plasma, & urine available from people with early Lyme, persistent Lyme, & controls. We also have a tissue bank.

Really interesting article about a 35 year study in PNAS showing in forests with oak trees, more acorns = more mice the following year, and more nymphal ticks the year after that. Acorn masting could predict Lyme disease 2 years later. Science is so cool! www.medicaldaily.com/acorn-crops-...

Thirty-Five Years of Forest Data Suggest Acorn Crops Predict Lyme Risk Better Than Deer Counts Do

A 35-year study found that deer numbers did not predict tick density in one forest. Acorns and mice did. What does it mean for tick prevention?

JAMA article about Lyme disease - highlights gaps in testing and new prevention strategies in development. Acknowledges that EM doesn't appear in all patients and treatment options haven't changed in 25 years. Great quotes from my colleagues, too! jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

A biobank stores patient samples so researchers can develop better diagnostics and treatments. @lymebiobank.bsky.social has been doing that since 2014 — 1,250+ patients, 25,500+ aliquots distributed, already delivering results. Listen to Liz Horn, PhD, MBI on Ticktective. #LymeDisease #Ticktective

Great blog about James Bruzzese, MD, and his quest to help patients with Lyme and tick-borne illness including his call to action for the next generation of medical professionals. (Yes - medical students would benefit from more than 1 lecture on Lyme disease).

James Bruzzese, MD, represents something the #Lyme community urgently needs: a new generation of doctors who understand that Lyme is real, that patients deserve better, and that the status quo must be challenged.

Great interview with @bayarealyme.bsky.social executive director David Walsey. He highlights 3 things that need to happen in the Lyme field: recognition of patients, more research funding (private and federal), and education of clinicians.

Authority Magazine just published a Social Impact Heroes interview with our Executive Director, David Walsey. David shares what brought him to Bay Area Lyme Foundation and what it will take to make #Lyme and other #tickbornediseases easy to diagnose and simple to cure.

So grateful for Biobank research participants and families who make this resource possible. I'm honored to work with amazing investigators and collaborators working on novel diagnostics for Lyme! We are making progress on this complex disease.

This is another single-tier test that I'm really excited about. We require sample users to provide results before we break the blind on the samples. This test from InBio and Kephera's Hybrid ELISA both look really good in early Lyme (~ 1 week) where current serology tests are insensitive.

New study in @jclinmicroeic.bsky.social shows a new multiplex Lyme serology test is more sensitive than standard two-tier serology tests! Detected more cases w EM at 7 days. Great collaboration with Pete Gwynne @tuftslyme.bsky.social journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...
